Cosmetic Clinic at Vale Healthcare: Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery)
Eyelid surgery (also known as Blepharoplasty) involves removing excess skin, fat or muscle from around the eyes to give a more youthful appearance. Blepharoplasty can be done of the upper lids or lower lids separately, or on both lids during the same operation.
As you get older, the skin around your eyes loses volume and elasticity. Some people develop obvious creases under their lower lids and loose skin on their upper eyelids that can sometime impair vision.
Blepharoplasty: the procedure
Eyelid surgery can take between one and three hours depending on the specific procedure you are having and how many eyelids are being operated on.
For upper eyelid surgery cuts will be made into your natural creases and in the corner wrinkles of your eyes. For lower eyelid surgery cuts are made just below your eyelashes and then out to the lines at the corner of your eyes. This will improve the look of your scars after the operation, as they will blend in with your natural facial lines. During the operation any excess fat and loose skin will be removed, and then repaired using fine stitches.
Results of eyelid surgery are usually long-lasting, but may be affected by genes/lifestyle. Removal of fat from eyelids (usually the cause of puffiness/bags, is permanent, and these conditions generally will not recur.
Depending on your occupation, you should be able to return to work after approximately 2 weeks (bearing in mind that the bruises may still be slightly visible). You should also not drive for 2 weeks and avoid strenuous activity/exercise for a month after the operation.
