Weight Loss Surgery | Body Mass Index (BMI)
A term often associated with Weight Loss Surgery is Body Mass Index (BMI).
Body Mass Index (BMI) indicates the degree of excess fat that an individual is carrying. Although BMI does not actually measure the percentage of body fat, it is used to estimate a healthy body weight based on a person's height, assuming an average body composition.
Intepreting your Body Mass Index (BMI)
- A BMI under 18.5 is considered underweight
- A BMI of 18.5 - 25 is considered a healthy weight
- A BMI of 25 - 30 is considered overweight
- A BMI of 30 - 40 is considered obese
- A BMI of over 40 is considered severely overweight
Some additional information in relation to Body Mass Index
- This calculation is used for adults only (not children)
- BMI is based on an average body composition, so it is important to consider your own build and frame when calculating BMI
- If you are over 60 years of age then your BMI calculation may not be accurate, as bones tend to begin to weigh less after this age
- BMI intepretations can differ in different countries.
