A variety of investigations or tests may be offered depending on the nature of your symptoms.

Colonoscopy

This is a fibreoptic endoscopic examination of the whole colon. It can detect colorectal cancer, polyps, colitis and diverticular disease. Full bowel cleansing (bowel preparation) is required for optimum views. The procedure can be performed under sedation.

Flexible sigmoidoscopy

This is a fibreoptic examination of the left side of the colon that is usually performed for rectal bleeding and alteration in bowel habit. Bowel cleansing is required before the test is performed. Although most patients are awake for the test it can be performed under sedation.

Barium enema

This is a radiological examination of the whole colon. After bowel preparation the lining of the colon and rectum is outlined with the use of barium and air.

MRI scan

This may be indicated to investigate small bowel conditions, anorectal fistula and to stage rectal cancer.

Anorectal physiology

This is a series of anorectal tests which examine the sphincter pressures and sensitivity and functional capacity of the rectum. This test is usually performed by a colorectal specialist nurse.

Endoanal / endorectal ultrasound

This investigation uses a specially designed anorectal probe to investigate incontinence, fistula, and cancer by providing a detailed image of the sphincter mechanism and rectum.

Proctogram

A dynamic investigation to investigate defaecatory disorders and rectal prolapse.

Colonic transit study

A radiological test to investigate constipation.

Laparoscopy

This is a diagnostic operation which explores the abdominal cavity with a camera under general anaessthetic to investigate certain types of abdominal pain.
