Falls Clinic

Falls are the most common cause of injury in later life, and one of the most frequently cited reasons why older people are admitted to a care home. By the time we reach 65 years old, we have a one in three risk of falling each year, and by the time we reach 85 years, this increases to one in two. 14,000 people in the UK die each year from hip fracture alone. Our specialist Falls Clinic based at our Cardiff Bay Clinic is an innovative way to help reduce the risk and manage the consequences of falling.

The risks of falling can be significantly reduced through detailed health assessment and a risk reduction program. Vale Healthcare now has a clinic for older people who have fallen or who are afraid of falling. The clinic is run by Dr Hugh Chadderton, Consultant Nurse who has extensive experience gained in Wales, the UK and beyond in the prevention of falls and who sees 300 patients a year in his NHS Falls Clinic. Initial appointments are one hour long and include

• A detailed history of your falls, or fear of falling
• A review of your past medical history
• A review of your medicines
• A review of the hazards in your home
• A review of your general health
• An examination of all relevant body systems
• An examination of your strength, balance and gait
• An initial osteoporosis screening
• An assessment of your footwear or walking aids

At the end of the assessment Dr Chadderton will explain your falls risks to you and help you put together a risk reduction plan. The plan may include further tests such as bloods, x-rays or a 24 hour blood pressure or ECG measurement, and will probably include a program of exercise with a Registered Exercise Professional.

Dr Chadderton will want to follow your progress over the following year with 20 minute assessments every two months. The Falls Clinic meets the standards in the National Service Framework for Older People in Wales.
