Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Sandeep Hemmadi is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon (Medically qualified Doctor) who specialises in Adult Foot and Ankle Surgery and Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery.

His specialist interests include surgical correction of bunions using the Scarf procedure, ankle arthroscopies (key hole surgery), ankle replacements, Lateral ligament reconstructions of the Ankle and Corrective surgery for Flat foot.

Sandeep works with Specialist Musculoskeletal Radiologists to offer his patients the most appropriate imaging to help make an accurate diagnosis. He also works with a team of experienced podiatrists and physiotherapists to achieve optimal post operative rehabilitation. Experience has taught him that patients really appreciate the time spent in explaining their problems to them using drawings, slides, videos and models so that they can make an informed choice regarding their own management.

Sandeep has successfully treated foot and ankle problems both conservatively and surgically in elite track and field athletes. He has also treated sportsmen from Cardiff City Football Club, Glamorgan Cricket Club and the Welsh Badminton Union.

Sandeep is a member of the faculty on MSc Course in Bioengineering at Cardiff University. He regularly teaches on the National surgical training programme for orthopaedic trainees. He is on the Faculty of the International Graf course for ultrasound scanning of baby hips. Over the years he has published in various National and International medical journals. He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and the British society for children’s orthopaedic surgery.

In 1999 he was appointed as a Consultant to the University Hospital of Wales Cardiff. This is a large teaching hospital and tertiary referral centre in the Capital City of Wales. He is also an Honorary Clinical tutor at The Welsh National School of Medicine. He obtained his Medical degree from Bombay University in 1999 and went on to do his postgraduate degree in Trauma and Orthopaedics at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. He then worked as a Senior Lecturer there gaining extensive surgical experience in managing complex trauma and performing Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery. He then underwent further Higher Surgical Training for 6 years on the All Wales training Programme. He obtained his FRCS from Glasgow and the FRCS (Tr&Orth) from the intercollegiate Board in Edinburgh. He completed his CCST in 1999.He did his Fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto Canada where he further improved his surgical skills and decision making before returning to a Consultant job in Cardiff.

Mr Rhys Thomas

Rhys Thomas is a fellowship-trained specialist in surgery of the adult foot and ankle.

Following his general orthopaedic training Mr Thomas undertook a 12 month fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at the prestigious University of Toronto, Canada.  Such training and continuing professional development in the field has led to Mr Thomas being the only surgeon in the UK to have been awarded fellowships by both the European and American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Societies.  As a result his patients benefit from an experienced knowledge base and the use of modern, recognised techniques.

Rhys regularly treats professional sports people.  Whilst he sees patients from a wide variety of disciplines, including Olympic athletes, his particular interest is in rugby.  He treats Welsh international players as well as those from both the Magners League and Guinness Premiership.  He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine UK and is Welsh Regional Representative.

He is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales and Cardiff and Vale Orthopaedic Centre. By working in a teaching hospital and as an Honorary Lecturer at Cardiff University Mr Thomas has a strong commitment to training the doctors and surgeons of the future.  He is co-convenor of the Royal College of Surgeons Core Skills in Orthopaedic Surgery course and runs the EOS Foot and Ankle Surgery course for foot and ankle surgeons from all over Europe.

Rhys has several major publications in medical journals.  He is invited to speak at both national and international conferences.  He sits on national committees for the treatment of Diabetic foot problems, and is involved with the design of new foot and ankle products.

Mr Thomas provides a multi-disciplinary service, liasing closely with physiotherapists, podiatrists and orthotists.

Rhys also provides Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) of the foot. This is primarily used to treat bunions [hallux valgus] and arthritis of the big toe, and on some occasions it can also be used for deformities of the smaller toes.
