Rhys Thomas is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Vale Healthcare, South Wales' leading private clinics and private hospital in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. Rhys practices at both the Vale Hospital and Cardiff Bay Clinic in South Wales. Rhys is a fellowship-trained specialist in surgery of the adult foot and ankle. He undertakes a full range of foot surgery and ankle surgery procedures including treatment of sporting injuries, treatment of bunions, and total ankle replacement.

Following his general orthopaedic training Mr Thomas undertook a 12 month fellowship in foot surgery and ankle surgery at the prestigious University of Toronto, Canada.  Such training and continuing professional development in the field has led to Mr Thomas being the only surgeon in the UK to have been awarded fellowships by both the European and American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Societies.  As a result his patients benefit from an experienced knowledge base and the use of modern, recognised techniques.

Rhys regularly treats professional sports people.  Whilst he sees patients from a wide variety of disciplines, including Olympic athletes, his particular interest is in rugby.  He treats Welsh international players as well as those from both the Magners League and Guinness Premiership.  He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine UK and is Welsh Regional Representative.

Rhys is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales and Cardiff and Vale Orthopaedic Centre. By working in a teaching hospital and as an Honorary Lecturer at Cardiff University Mr Thomas has a strong commitment to training the doctors and surgeons of the future.  He is co-convenor of the Royal College of Surgeons Core Skills in Orthopaedic Surgery course and runs the EOS Foot and Ankle Surgery course for foot and ankle surgeons from all over Europe.

Rhys has several major publications in medical journals.  He is invited to speak at both national and international conferences.  He sits on national committees for the treatment of Diabetic foot problems, and is involved with the design of new foot and ankle products.

Mr Thomas provides a multi-disciplinary service, liasing closely with physiotherapists, podiatrists and orthotists.

Rhys also provides Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) of the foot. This is primarily used to treat bunions [hallux valgus] and arthritis of the big toe, and on some occasions it can also be used for deformities of the smaller toes.
