He has an interest in joint replacement in the young adult and has performed resurfacing hip replacement for a number of years. In his South Wales NHS practice he performs a high volume of joint replacements annually. At undergraduate level Tim trained in Cardiff qualifying in 1986. He performed the early part of his surgical training in South Wales before performing his specialist training in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne between 1991 and 1996. He then completed a specialist hip replacement fellowship in Chicago, USA. Tim has published a number of articles in peer reviewed journals in this field, and has presented at a number of international meetings. He travels regularly to various international centres to maintain his knowledge and expertise.
Mr Owen performs all types of hip replacement according to the patients needs including resurfacing replacements, uncemented, cemented and hybrid hip replacements. He is a trained specialist Revision Hip and Knee Replacement Surgeon, and is referred complex primary joint replacements and revision hip and knee replacements by numerous colleagues in South Wales. He has a number of active research projects and is currently reviewing all of his work, now with meaningful follow up for publication.
As well as joint replacement, Tim still maintains a General Orthopaedic Practice including Trauma Surgery, participating in regular on calls at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. He feels it is important to maintain a trauma practice for the modern day orthopaedic surgeon, and specialises in trauma surgery to and around the hip, in all age groups.
A keen sportsman from his university days, Tim still regularly runs, skis, rides horses and has recently cycled from Lands End To John O’Groats in 9 days for charity.
