What is Laparoscopic Surgery?
Laparoscopic surgery is also known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery (MIS), and is often performed as an alternative to 'open surgery'.
Laparoscopic surgery involves making a number of small incisions in the abdomen, and using a laparoscope (a thin telescope with a light source) which is used to light up and magnify the structures inside the abdomen. In addition to the laparscope (which can see inside the abdomen), surgeons can then use specialist surgical instruments to operate laparoscopically. Laparoscopic surgery can be used for a number of procedures.
This surgery is performed using a general anaesthetic.
Benefits of Laparoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopic surgery has a host of benefits, listed below. Overall, patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery have a less invasive procedure - which in turn will aid them in their recovery.
- Laparoscopic surgery leads to less operative trauma with reduction of the incidence of complications.
- Laparoscopic surgery is performed through smaller skin incisions with lesser chance of wound infection.
- Laparoscopic surgery leads to reduction in scar tissue formation and better cosmesis.
- Laparoscopic surgery is associated with less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery.
- Laparoscopic surgery leads to quicker return to work.
- Laparoscopic surgery reduces the risks of long term complications (incisional hernia).

Laparoscopic Gynaecology Surgery at Vale Healthcare
Vale Healthcare's Laparoscopic Gynaecology surgery team is led by Mr Sanjay Chawathe, who specialises in laparoscopic hysterectomies.

Laparoscopic hysterectomy
Laparoscopic hysterectomy is a surgical procedure in which the uterus is detached from inside the body by laparoscopic instruments using a small camera telescope.
Laparoscopic hysterectomy shares the same benefits of all laparoscopic surgery including quicker recovery, less post-surgical pain, and smaller incisions meaning less chance of wound infection. The procedure is regarded as much less uncomfortable than that of abdominal hysterectomy, and the hospital stay and ability to resume normal activity is substantially shorter than for abdominal hysterectomy and slightly shorter than for vaginal hysterectomy.
