Our treatments

Vale Healthcare provides patient focused care and excellence in treating all conditions of the eye. We provide a complete service, which encompasses assessment diagnosis surgery and rehabilitation. All our treatments are performed to the highest standards with regular audit and assessment of outcome results.

Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery at Vale Healthcare is usually performed under local anaesthetic by small incision surgery. This is either performed at the Vale Hospitall, or Cardiff Bay Clinic - equipped to accommodate eye surgery.

Before your operation you will be given an appointment to attend one of our dedicated consultant-led cataract clinics. All necessary investigations are performed at the clinic and you will then be given the opportunity to discuss any questions you have and choose the date of your cataract operation.

After your surgery you will receive postoperative care instructions and a follow up appointment will be arranged. Patients with bilateral cataracts will be offered second eye surgery after successful completion of their first eye operation and postoperative follow up.

Eyelid (Adnexal) Disorder

A routine eyelid and adnexal disorder service is provided at the Cardiff Bay Clinic. Minor lid lesions (areas of altered tissues) and cysts (fluid filled sacs) are seen and may be treated in a one-stop clinic.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is the name for a group of eye diseases in which the optic nerve is damaged (the optic nerve is the bundle of nerve fibres that carries information from the eye to the brain). The glaucoma service provides a comprehensive assessment, screening and investigation, monitoring and treatment service.

Macular Degeneration (AMD)

The macula is the area at the very centre of the retina. About 5 mm across, it is the most sensitive and important part of the retina - responsible for what we see directly in front of us. We need a healthy macula to see fine detail when reading and writing. It is the part of the retina which sees colour best. As its name suggests, AMD is a degenerative condition of the macula linked to getting older. It is the most common cause of loss of vision in patients aged over 65 in the developed world.

Oculoplastic Surgery (Eye lid)

For droopy eyelids, excess skin, watery eyes or eyelid lumps, our surgeons are able to give advice about the best course of action and, if surgery is required, can often undertake most procedures as day case treatment under local anaesthetic.
