Cosmetics Clinic at Vale Healthcare: Otoplasty / Prominent ear correction
Otoplasty / Prominent ear correction
Prominent ear correction surgery (also known as Otoplasty) is a cosmetic procedure performed to change the appearance of the ears. Otoplasty can take several forms of procedure and is usually used to bring the ears closer to the head (ear pinning).
The cosmetic surgery of Otoplasty is a common procedure and can be performed on both adults and children.
Otoplasty / Prominent ear correction: the procedure
The operation for prominent ear correction takes approximately 90 minutes, and is usually carried out under local anaesthetic for adults (children are usually given a general anaesthetic).
We usually make a small cut behind the ear, and use permanent stitches to manipulate the cartilage into the required position. Sometimes we may need to remove some of the cartilage. Any scarring is hidden in the natural crease where the ear meets the head
After the operation you will have a head bandage applied which will not feel tight, and this should remain in place, day and night, for one week.
It is also worth buying a sports headband before surgery, so you can wear it after your bandages come off. The headband should be a comfortable fit and not too tight.
Depending on your occupation you can consider going back to work after the bandages have been removed (after 1 week). You will need to avoid all contact sport for 6 months after the operation and will need to continue to wear your sports headband at night for 4-6 weeks after the operation.
The results of Otoplasty are immediate and permanent.
