Gynaecology ultrasound and other diagnostic imaging

A gynaecology ultrasound scan involves the insertion of a vaginal probe (a small device inserted gently into the lower vagina) to obtain the clearest views of the pelvis. In some circumstances pelvic scans may be performed through the tummy wall.

Other imaging (such MRI), together with a blood test, can also be provided. A management plan using the results from the scan results a management plan can be made: this can range from reassurance, or repeating the scan in a couple of months’ time, through to surgery (including laparoscopic).

Hysterospcopy

A hysteroscopy is undertaken to check the state of your endometrium and to take small samples, called biopsies, for examination under the microscope. A special narrow telescope called a hysteroscope is passed through the vagina and cervix, into the body of the uterus. There are no incisions. A biopsy will be taken from the endometrium if any abnormality is found. The investigatory procedure is often undertaken as an outpatient procedure or under sedation as a day case.

Colposcopy

A colposcopy procedure is undertaken to inspect the cervix and to guide treatment usually following an abnormal smear. Biopsies are usually taken, and if treatment is required, this can almost always be performed under local anaesthetic. Suspicious lesions of the cervix and of the vulva can be assessed in the same way.

Fertility checks

While fertility health checks, including an assessment of hormone status, ovulation confirmation, fallopian tube patency and semen analysis are undertaken at the Clinic, complex fertility treatment is not.

Well Woman Health Screen

The Cardiff Bay Clinic offers a “well woman” health screen program which is usually undertaken on a yearly basis. The program includes a cervical smear and pelvic examination to check for diseases of the ovaries and breast examination. Additional tests are undertaken as necessary.
