Patient Information
Symptoms of neurological illness
Symptoms of neurological illness are wide ranging. They include headache, blackouts, seizures, dizziness, weakness, numbness, visual symptoms, poor memory, speech problems, tremor, falls, gait, movement and coordination problems and bladder problems.
Assessment and treatment
The Consultant Neurologist will aim to identify the site of the neurological disturbance, its likely cause, and offer appropriate medical treatment.
A neurological evaluation relies heavily on exploration of a patient's clinical history, that is a description of the symptoms and their evolution over time as well any other past medical, family, medication use and social history.
Following this a detailed neurological examination along with appropriate investigations are used to support the diagnosis. Follow up after investigations or after the passage of a period of time are sometimes necessary. In some cases the Consultant Neurologist will refer a patient onto a Neurosurgeon or other specialist as needed.
