Dr Jim Martin
Consultant Rheumatologist
MD, FRCP, MBChB.
Dr Jim Martin is a Consultant Rheumatologist, who graduated from Glasgow University in 1986. He developed an interest in rheumatology whilst working in Aberdeen, where he also undertook clinical research in the field of osteoporosis which led to the award of an MD thesis in 1997. In 1998 he was appointed as consultant rheumatologist with a specialist interest in osteoporosis, for the now Cwm Taf NHS Trust in South Wales. His NHS practice is based at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant and Dewi Sant Hospital, Pontypridd, South Wales. These roles are complemented by his private rheumatology consultant practice at Vale Healthcare near Cardiff, South Wales where he sees patients with general rheumatological conditions.
Dr Martin also undertakes speciality clinics for patients with lupus, ankylosing spondylitis and those requiring biologic therapies. He has a clinical and research interest in osteoporosis for which he is the lead clinician in Cwm Taf Trust, running dedicated osteoporosis and metabolic bone clinics and overseeing the bone densitometry (DXA) unit in Dewi Sant Hospital.
Dr Martin is married with two daughters. He enjoys playing tennis at his local club where he is a regular team player, committee member and past men's captain. He also enjoys playing golf in any remaining spare time.
Special clinical interests include Osteoporosis, Inflammatory Joint Disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Biologic Therapies in Inflammatory Joint Disease. Research interests include Osteoporosis diagnosis, assessment and management.
