Cosmetics Clinic at Vale Healthcare: Rhinoplasty / Nose re-shaping
Rhinoplasty / Nose re-shaping
Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic enhancement procedure used to change the shape or size of the nose. Nose re-shaping is a very common procedure which is usually performed for cosmetic reasons or to re-shape the nose after an injury.
Rhinoplasty / Nose re-shaping: the procedure
A rhinoplasty operation usually lasts around 2 hours, and takes place under general anaesthetic.
During a rhinoplasty operation, the height and shape of the nose are
changed by operating through cuts made inside the nostrils. To aid this procedure, you need to ensure that you are free from any infection of the nose or throat on the day or surgery.
Following the procedure you will usually be in hospital for one overnight stay. After the surgery, you will have a plaster or splint on your nose, which is held onto your cheeks and forehead with sticking plaster.
Although we try to avoid them, you may have packs inside your nose to help control swelling and bleeding. These will be removed before leaving hospital.
There are 2 main types of nasal plastic surgery: Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty.
- Rhinoplasty: is a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure to change the shape and contour of the patient's nose.
- Septoplasty: is a reconstructive procedure designed to improve nasal function from the inside. You will be seen one or two weeks after the operation and at this follow-up appointment, the plaster or splint and any external stitches will be removed.
Sometimes it will be recommended that you have a septorhinoplasty, a combination of the above two procedures.
Depending on your occupation it is usually okay to return to work approximately 10 days after the operation.
