Our Treatments

These are some but not all procedures carried out by the clinic's Shoulder surgeons.

All procedures take place at either the Cardiff Bay Clinic (day-case procedures including arthroscopies) or The Vale Hospital (procedures requiring an overnight stay).

Shoulder Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is commonly known as 'key hole surgery'. Usually two or three 5mm puncture wounds are only required. Shoulder arthroscopy is used to determine more precisely what is wrong.

Rotator Cuff Repair

A complete rotator cuff tear will not heal. Complete ruptures usually require surgery if your goal is to return your shoulder to optimal function. A rotator cuff repair involves stitching the torn tendon back onto its attachment to the arm.

Shoulder Impingement

Subacromial impingement develops if either the rotator cuff is injured (strained) or some bone deformity is present under the acromion. The rotator cuff and acromion will then rub against one another, causing a painful condition known as impingement.

Arthroscopic Labral Repair

If the labrum is torn the shoulder can become unstable. This is what happens in shoulder dislocations and instability. Different injury mechanisms cause different tears in various sites around the labrum.

Shoulder Resurfacing

Shoulder resurfacing is a superior alternative to shoulder replacement surgery. It is a surgical procedure that allows patients to retain much of their natural tissue, by replacing only the diseased part of the joint instead of the entire joint. Shoulder resurfacing is less traumatic, less invasive and a more bone preserving procedure.

Shoulder Joint Replacement

In shoulder replacement surgery, the painful surfaces of the damaged shoulder are resurfaced with artificial shoulder parts. The part that replaces the ball consists of a stem with a rounded metal head. The part that replaces the socket consists of smooth plastic.
