Spine Surgery

  • All spine surgery will be explained by the consultant.  This may include video animated explanations of the relevant spinal procedure

  • Our spine surgery procedures use minimally invasive techniques wherever possible
  • Pre and post-operative management relevant to your procedure and spine condition will be explained by one of your manegement team (probably your physiotherapist)

Listed below are some but not all spine surgery procedures carried out in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan by Vale Healthcare's spinal clinic surgeons:

Decompression Discectomy (cervical or lumbar)

Removal of the herniated part of the disc and bone, relieving pressure on the nerve root therefore decreasing back pain and dysfunction. This procedure varies from minimally invasive for small herniations to more invasive for larger herniations where larger decompresions are required.

Spinal Fusion

Spinal fusion is the fusing of two or more motion segments within the spinal column. There are various fusion techniques available and they tend to be named after the surgical approach used, ie anterior, posterior, lateral and transverse spinal fusion. The spinal surgeon will select the relevant technique and explain the procedure.

Spinal fusions are used for all manner of spinal conditions including degenerative facet joints, degenerative disc disease and spondylolisthesis.

Laminectomy (cervical or lumbar)                   

This procedure entails the removal of a section bone called the lamina from one or more vertebrae relieving pressure on surrounding tissue and reducing back pain.

Disc Replacement

This procedure entails the removal of the old disc and fitting of a prosthetic replacement disc. This technique allows the spine to function as near as normal as is possible.
 
With certain conditions cervical or lumbar disc replacement can be considered.
