Do I need a referral from my GP for weight loss surgery?
You do not require a GP referral in order to have weight loss surgery (you may self-refer), however we will always keep your GP in the picture regarding your treatment and care, unless you request otherwise.
The first step in seeking medical advice regarding weight loss surgery is normally to speak with you GP. Your GP will usually provide us with a referral letter, and this is often the start of our on-going communication to ensure that you're receiving the right support throughout your weight loss treatment process.
How long will I be in hospital for my weight loss surgery?
Your length of stay in hospital will depend on the weight loss treatment you have, and your individual circumstances.
However, in general a Gastric Banding will require one night's stay in hospital, and a gastric balloon fitting will not require an overnight stay (this is a day-case procedure).
Will I need to go on a special diet before the weight loss procedure?
All patients undergoing weight loss surgery are required to go on a pre-operative diet, known as a 'liver diet'.
This diet is necessary in order to reduce the size of the liver, and make access during your operation as easy as possible.
You will be given full guidance and information in relation to this diet, prior to your wieght loss treatment.
