Consultant Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgeon (Weight Loss Surgeon)
Jonathan Barry is a Consultant Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgeon (Weight Loss Surgeon) at the Welsh Institute of Metabolic and Obesity Surgery based at Morriston Hospital in Swansea.
Jonathan is highly experienced in weight loss and obesity surgery, including gastric banding, gastric balloons, gastric sleeves, and gastric bypass operations.
Jonathan qualified from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1996 and completed his surgical training on the all Wales higher surgical training scheme. He was awarded the degree of Master of Surgery with his thesis on stomach cancer in 2006.
Following completion of his higher surgical training he was appointed to a one year fellowship in obesity surgery at a specialist unit in Liverpool prior to taking up his post in Swansea.
Jonathan Barry’s main interests include: All aspects of the management of morbid obesity, Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for morbid obesity (including gastric banding and gastric balloons), Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, and Hernia surgery.
Mr Jonathan Barry runs weekly clinics at the Vale Hospital for weight loss surgery, and performs both Gastric Band operations and Gastric Balloon operations at the Vale Hospital / Cardiff Bay Clinic.

Helen has been nursing since 1984 and worked in a variety of specialities including stroke rehabilitation, gynaecology, thoracic surgery/thoracic HDU, chest medicine, general surgery, orthopaedic surgery and oncology.
Helen joined Vale Healthcare in May 2010 in outpatients as the pre-assessment nurse. She now works as part of the ward team caring for a wide range of surgical specialities.
Helen became the Bariatric Lead Nurse and has an interest in weight loss surgery and patient support. She works alongside our Bariatric surgeon Mr Jon Barry, at his clinics at the Vale Hospital.
Helen has set up a patient forum group that meets every six to eight weeks covering a wide rang of topics regarding Bariatric surgery including diet plans, exercise, skin care and support. The group gives peer support with input from other health professionals. Helen is contactable via a blackberry Monday to Friday 9-5.
Helen aims to provide patient centred care through all stages of the multi-disciplinary approach to weight loss surgery. She prides herself on supporting the patient at each stage and then is able to care for the patients both pre and post op.

Dr James Morgan is the lead Consultant Anaesthetist at the Welsh Institute of Metabolic and Obesity surgery based at Morriston Hospital in Swansea. He brings with him a wealth of experience - including weight loss anaesthetics, heart and lung anaesthetics and intensive care anaesthetice - to his private consultant anasthetist role at Vale Healthcare, South Wales' leading private clinics and private hospital, near Cardiff
Born and raised in South Wales, James qualified from Southampton University Medical School in 1989 before undertaking postgraduate training in the teaching hospitals of Southampton, Manchester and Sheffield.
He is doubly qualified in the Fellowship examinations of both the Royal Colleges of Anaesthetists and Physicians and was delighted to be appointed to his Consultant post in his home town in 1999.
He is the most experienced Anaesthetist practicing anaesthesia for bariatric (weight-loss) surgery throughout Wales and has developed this expertise alongside his other speciality interest of cardiothoracic (heart and lungs) anaesthesia and intensive care at the ABM University Cardiac Unit.
As well as having been Royal College Tutor with responsibility for the teaching of trainee Anaesthetic doctors, James holds current membership of the Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists and is one of the founder members of the Society of Bariatric Anaesthetists.
To all patients contemplating weight-loss surgery, James offers a bespoke Anaesthetic programme which includes a full pre-operative evaluation followed by medical care in the operating suite and beyond which involves the most up-to-date pharmaceutical and monitoring techniques for bariatric procedures.
