How does the Weight Loss Surgery Clinic work?
The first step is contacting one of our specialist weight loss surgery advisors. You will be able to discuss your options, including the procedures that are available at Vale Healthcare - Gastric Banding, Gastric Sleeve and Gastric Balloons. Our staff will aim to provide you with specialist advice and guidance before you make a consultation with one of our weight loss surgery consultant surgeons.
Appointments with our weight loss consultant surgeons are available weekly, with all initial appointments taking place at the Vale Hospital. You will be able to meet with a consultant surgeon who can fully discuss your options in relation to which weight loss procedures are available to you, and how your treatment at Vale Healthcare will work.
During your weight loss consulation you will be asked to complete a pre-operative questionnaire, which is used to assess your medical history, co-morbid conditions, your current eating habits, and the previous diet methods you have explored. At this stage of consultation you will also meet with our specialist Bariatric Dietician.
You will also undergo a pre-operative assessment to assess your appropriateness for weight loss surgery such as gastric band, gastric sleeve or gastic balloon insertion. This will include meeting with members of Vale Healthcare's multi-disciplinary weight loss team including a specialist weight loss surgery nurse, a dietician and a psychologist specialising in this field.
If you proceed through to surgery then you may be asked to undergo a pre-operative liver shrinking diet, 2 weeks prior to your surgery. This will be discussed in full with your surgeon and dietician before any treatment progresses.

Weight loss surgery treatments available at Vale Healthcare
All our weight loss surgery treatments are performed laparoscopically (through key-hole surgery), which minimises the risks of surgery and shortens recovery time.
Gastric Banding (laparoscopic)
Gastric Banding is a type of weight loss surgery in which the size of the stomach is reduced using a band. This means that only small meals can such be eaten before feeling full.
The gastric band procedure is performed under general anaeshetic at the Vale Hospital, and usually takes less than one hour. Patients usually stay for one night in hospital.

Gastric Ballooning (laparoscopic)
The gastric balloon is a temporary weight loss solution, which is usually used as part of a greater weight loss plan.
The gastric balloon is swallowed via a long tube, and then once in place it is filled with a saline solution. The balloon reduces the size of the stomach, thus making the patient feel full.
The gastric balloon can be used for up to 6 months, at which stage it would be removed.
Gastric Sleeve
The Gastric Sleeve procedure is a restrictive procedure, which is normally performed laparoscopically. It can be performed as a stand alone procedure, or as part of a two-stage plan (prior to further weight loss surgery).
The gastric sleeve reduces the stomach capacity by approx. 80%, and divides the stomach vertically from top to bottom. This reduces the capacity of the stomach, whilst retaining it's normal function, and allows you to eat smaller meals and feel full for longer.
The gastric band procedure is performed under general anaeshetic at the Vale Hospital, and usually takes between 30 minutes and one hour. Patients usually stay for one night in hospital.
